Got 9 Ikola Kaisers from Greg at Littleafricaaquatics yesterday. In a 55gal with a Goldface Comp (3") and my lone front (5.5"). Ph - 8.2 Hardness - 200 Kh - 150 Nitrate - 0 Nitrite - 0 Good rockwork, beach sand, and 20% waterchanges weekly. Feeding 70% spirulina 20% color flake, and 10% shrimp pellets. Are these conditions suitable for happy trophs? They are F1's, awesome banding, and they are sifting sand, trying to scrape the rocks of algae( there is none!) and swimming all over the place. New to keeping these guys and don't want to make any blatant mistakes, as my wife had a coronary when she saw the invoice! No more fish for a while. So, everything sound ok?!! -------------------- Catching them, eating them, or keeping them, I love fish!

Congratulations! Tropheus are truly unlike most other cichlids to keep. They HATE change. They do not like change to their diet especially. If they were not feed shrimp pellets etc previously, it is a very good idea not to feed them now... or if you really want to, make sure to change over to them gradually. Ask Greg what he fed them, and feed them this while you're acclimating them. The more the merrier, you have just enough for a small colony and some would argue the 55 is a bit small for them (I kept a few in a 55g before without too much trouble though). What you really want to do is read up on these fish as much as you can, because like I said they are different than many cichlids. We have a sister site dedicated to their care that you may enjoy perusing.... Trophs.com http://www.Trophs.com hope that helps, lets see some pics of those beauties -------------------- |

PS... how did you get your nitrates to 0 ??? Is your test kit old by any chance? Not old. Was doing MAD filtration and water changes in anticipation of their arrival, and didn't feed the front and comp for four days prior. A little overkill, but wasn't taking any chances. Saw that you were on the Trophs.com site, but figured I would get alot of specific caretaking if I posted there first. Wanted some general info before I started rambling on over there. 55gal is pushing it, huh?! Got a 75 but, it has most of my young/sub-adults in it for now. 20 yellow labs @ 1.75", four Afras @ the same, 6 Acei, and the poor lone silver dollar my wife won't let go of (doesn't seem to mind hardness)! Ten Saulosi on the way, and all are F1's. Could put the front and comp in the 30high, but he(front) would be very unhappy w/me. Biggest troph is @ 2, 2.25" and the rest just starting to show a little color. Will keep my feet in mbunas, but had to have a small Tang tank. Start looking for a bigger tank is what I will have to do. Like we need an excuse for that!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mwuh-ha-ha!! Thanks Heather. -------------------- Catching them, eating them, or keeping them, I love fish!

they do not like change they need to be feed the same time everyday and change the same amount of water at the same time every week . that is what everyone has told me . i do not follow this rule . i change up to 80 % of my water every 7 to 10 days i turn the lights on at different times and off the same way my red moliro and cherry and pineapples do just fine . and breed . the 1 big thing is not to change the layout of the tank !!! that will jack them up . lol i feed them Dainichi veggie deluxe and veggie Fx mixed 50/50 2 times a day . and i only keep them in there own tanks no other fish with them . -------------------- |
